Police Brutality

The recent events in Humbolt county, CA, where police used pepper spray to
torture environmental protesters, illustrates a disturbing trend: we are
moving toward a police state.

It isn't so surprising that such brutality should occur; police brutality has
existed as long as police. What is surprising is the blaise way in which it
is accepted by the police supervisors, chief of police, political leaders
and the population at large. The police Internal Affairs department has
become a bitter parody, like the Ministry of Love in "1984". Almost without
exception, Internal Affairs justifies even the most brutal and indefensible
police conduct.

Our political leaders are no help. They have refused to reign in the police,
perhaps fearing retribution or the dreaded "soft on crime" label. As a
result, the police have become increasingly bold in their use of force.
Surely we can't allow the police to dole out punishment as they see fit?

Civilian control of the police must be retained/increased. The perpetrators
of police brutality must be brought to justice to send a message to others.
Or maybe it's too late.
